I don't like Pumpkin Spice Lattes. There, I said it.
There's nothing remotely pumpkin-y about them. And the obsession is equally as irritating. I was at Starbuck's with a friend once and in a bizarre twist he ordered an iced Pumpkin Spice latte. Come on, those flavors don't belong on ice. It was impossible to miss the ridiculous drink once they placed up on the bar for pick-up. The cups for iced drinks are clear so the color of the Pumpkin Spice was visible for once. And it was disturbing, a fake-y mustard color that looked like melted crayons. There was not even a slight resemblance to coffee or anything coffee adjacent. I took a sip and nearly gagged at the cloying sweetness.
Long story short, I'll take a pass on the Pumpkin Spice lattes. But good old fashioned pumpkin? Send it my way. I love a pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread, of course. But pumpkin needs more of a chance in the savory spotlight. We need to quit putting pumpkin in a corner. Here's four recipes that give pumpkin a savory slant. I'll cheers to that. With something other than a Pumpkin Spice latte.
