Thoughtful Eating: Seeds

These days I have a protein smoothie for breakfast everyday after my workout. I miss my giant yogurt parfait (and I still have one on the weekends sometimes) but I've grown to love my smoothie ritual. Here's my basic recipe 1 cup milk, two scoops protein powder, a dollop or two of non-fat plain greek yogurt, ice, about a cup of frozen fruit (some mix of berries, cherries, pineapple and peaches) and lastly a tablespoon of magical seeds; either flax of chia. It's a lovely little breakfast and p.s. I usually can't make it until lunch and I have banana an hour or two later. I've known about the nutritional wonders of flaxseed for quite awhile. But it wasn't until recently that I found out you don't get much of the nutritional benefits unless they are ground up. So this week I've been adding a heaping tablespoon of ground flaxseed to my morning smoothie. Chia seeds are relatively new to me and the good thing about them is you don't have to grab them. You can drop them right in. They kind of look like poppy seeds but as they get wet a little bead of gel forms around the seed. It's a little bit weird and some people hate it, but I got used to it quickly. One word of warning though, be sure to floss after because these little suckers can really get wedged in your teeth. It ain't cute.

All in all I like both types of seeds. Chia seeds were sold out this week so I switched to flax. But either way it's an easy addition to your diet that packs a super awesome nutritional punch. How's that for some really awesome thoughtful eating?

Have you tried either of these fantastic seeds?
