What’s on your nightstand?

The iPad/Kindles of today seem cool but I love the heft of a book, the cover art and the feeling of the paper pages. I’m not quite ready to let go of that yet. I’m right in the middle of Pat Conroy’s Beach Music (it’s a monster at 816 pages) but its is quite good. An epic and engrossing tale that’s easy to get lost in plus I have a weakness for any book that reads like a love letter to the south. So what about you? What’s on your nightstand? Any must-read recommendations?

P.S. Also don’t forget to enter the City Light Photography giveaway! I’ll choose one lucky winner tomorrow night.
P.P.S. Losties, what did you think of last night’s episode?! I’m still reeling.

I love everything mac and ipad seems so shiny and attractive, which is not surprising. However, as far as the e-book thing goes, I’m for the tradition. I can’t change the excitement of a new book in my hand with a click on an electronic device.
and i just can’t help share this hilarious article on ipad:

I’m a reader of classics (most of the time), As I Lay Dying by Faulkner is on my nightstand lately, just before that I finished a contemporary novel though; White Teeth by Zadie Smith, whose writing skills just left me indisbelief and utter jealousy!

Beach Music was a wonderful read. I am reading The Song is You. Each sentence is a mini piece of wonderfulness.

If you haven’t read Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, read it. It’s sooo good. Right now I’m reading Meditations from the Mat- for the yoga-centric, it’s very good.

The White Queen by Phillipa Gregory. Love it so far! The history of the war of the roses in england is so interesting and tragic.

Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert is wonderful; as is Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls.

right now, I’m reading “The Help” and enjoying it, but the last book I LOVED was “Molokai” about the leper colony in Hawaii. it’s a fascinating tale of one leper’s entire life. i highly recommend it!

I’m reading “Fortress of Solitude” by Jonathan Lethem right now, and I highly recommend it. It’s really fantastic.

In honor of the death of both Salinger and Zinn, my next (re) reads are “Catcher in the Rye” and “A People’s History.” I highly recommend either.

Gosh I love Pat Conroy.
I’ve got a few books on the go at the moment, waiting for one to hook me in, then I’ll go back and finish the others.
My Year of Meat by Ruth Ozeki
A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley
and Hells Angels by Hunter S. Thompson.

I completely agree with your comments about books. As shiny and enticing as the Kindle may be, it just doesn’t compare to an actual book.
I just finished The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and LOVED it. I cried. It was just that good.

I have a Kindle and it is great for traveling and on the go reading but nothing beats holding a real book. I am reading Game Change which is an in depth look at the political campaigns in the presidential election of 2008 with a sharp focus on the individual candidates and their spouses. It is revealing and informative.

I’m reading “The Help” right now. It’s about black women raising white children in Mississippi. I’ve only read the first couple of chapters, but I’m hooked!

I’m reading a couple of books right now. Anna Karinina is what I read during breakfast, but at night I’m reading The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, which I highly recommend.

Agreed! My brother just didn’t understand why I returned the Kindle that he got me a few years ago. Recently I decided that I should read the top 200 ficton novels of all time, currently I’m working on Great Expectations, but I have to admit that Dickens is not my fave. Loved Wuthering Heights though!
