Yes! I've made LOADS of them (they make awesome gifts during the winter holidays). I've made vanilla, lavender, ginger, coconut, strawberry, orange...they aren't difficult to make, as long as you have a standing mixer (like a Kitchen Aid) with a whisk attachment. You need something powerful enough to beat it very quickly. And yes, the powdered sugar part can get messy, but hey, crafting gets messy, too.

I've used the Martha Stewart recipe as well. It's a good base recipe and you can work from that. If you make flavored marshmallows, substitute another extract for the vanilla. BUT, start with a small amount of extract and work your way up. Depending on the brand and the flavor used, 1/4 tsp can sometimes be enough.

You totally should! Pete and I made some for Christmas and they were delish. We used Alton Brown's recipe from Food TV. Just a warning: very very messy, but worth it!
Oh, and you need a powerful mix master too...
